The new organization was launched at a media event in New Jersey last week.
The initial board members of the Supply Chain Council include warehouse developer Prologis, Johnson Controls, Sierra Northern Rail Company, SSA Marine, Laborers’ International Union of North America, and the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association.
“We are bringing the links of the supply chain together,” said Josh Wood, CEO of the Supply Chain Council, at the event. “We will be championing legislation to strengthen supply chain resiliency and jobs.”
The problem the Council wants to solve: today, supply chain segments are usually viewed independently. Instead, the need is to focus on interconnectedness of different freight segments, the new group says.
“There’s been a lot of talk about the supply chain and its importance over the past few years but policy has certainly not met the moment,” said Steven Hussain, senior vice president of government affairs at Prologis, and Chair of the council, at the event. “Effective policy should include all facets of the supply chain. Right now, policy only addresses parts like ports or just trucking. When you create policy for one entity, that policy could adversely impact another supply chain participant. There needs to be education on the interconnectivity of the supply chain.”
“Creating resiliency in the supply chain is complex because of this interconnectivity,” Hussain added. “None of us were thinking about CrowdStrike and the impact that it would have. That’s just one challenge the supply chain is dealing with. You also have the Red Sea and the Panama Canal. There will always be challenges and we need to make sure we are not unintentionally weakening the supply chain that can stop investment and diversification.”

Wood told CNBC there needs to be redundancy built into the system and data sharing amongst the supply chain is crucial. “This needs to be expanded, not reduced,” he said. “It is critical not only to secure our data, but it must also be recorded and gathered in real time for resiliency.”
The Council said some 20 members of the council would be meeting soon at a “policy retreat” to draft a policy and legislative agenda.
“We have lots of ideas, but this is the time to build a consensus,” Wood said.
However, the organization intends to serve as a force to help get supply chain physical infrastructure built.
