APCIS of course has been since well-known since 1973, when it launched the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) designation. In 2006, it released its Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) certification program.
In 2011, the Council of Supply Chain Management professionals released a three-part SCPro supply chain certification program, while the Institute for Supply Management offers a number of certification programs in procurement and more general supply chain management.
In 2015, APICS announced it had merged American Society of Transportation and Logistics (AST&L), which at the time had three credentials program, including the Certified in Transportation and Logistics (CTL) designation.
Those AST&L programs have now been superseded with the new APICS certification.
Of course, professional organization such as CSCMP and APICS pursue development of certification programs for several reasons, partially to add to their overall relevance to supply chain practitioners but more importantly to generate revenue from fees for training materials and taking the exams.
The CLTD program consists of eight modules, listed below, along with the weighting of each for the exam:

Also below is a sampling from the preview of the CLTD exam study materials, specifically for section IV, on Inventory and Warehouse Management (some but not all of the content in this section):
Example of Exam Focus Areas: Module IV, Inventory and Warehouse Management

The exam consists of a single set of 150 multiple-choice questions (130 operational and 20 pretest). Candidates will have 3.5 hours to complete the exam.

In terms of preparing for the exam, APICS says there are three options, as with its other certifications: self-directed, instructor-led, or corporate group (instructor-led courses are offered through the APICS network of local channel partners).
Eligibility requirements to take the exam are rather light. Candidates are eligible to take the exam if they have 3 years of related business experience; or a Bachelor's degree or the international equivalent; or if they have CPIM,CSCP, CTL, CFPIM, CIRM, SCOR-P, C.P.M., CSM or CPSM designations.
APICS says that "As a CLTD designee, you will stand out from your peers, and demonstrate a commitment to advancing both your career and your company's operations."
Candidates can begin taking the CLTD exam October 1, 2016. Exams are administered through Pearson VUE, an independent service provider.
There are discounts, however, for early sign up. Non-APICS members who sign up for the exam before Oct. 1 pay $425 and receive one free retake. Those signing up between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 also pay $425 but do not get a free retake if they do not pass.
Those signing up after Dec. 31 will pay $525. Retakes are $250. Exams are about $50 less expensive for APICS members.
