Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: the TEU Share of US Northern and Mid-Altantic Ports, Triggered by Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Shut Down of Baltimore Leads Drewry to Take a Look

April 4, 2023

The tragic accident led to the deaths of several workers when the Scott Key Bridge near the Port of Baltmore has partially shut down the operations there.

That led the maritime analysts at Drewry to take a look at the shares of north and mid-Atantic US ports by TEU volumes and capacities, as shown in the graphic below:

As can be seen, the primary gateway in the northern and mid-half of the US East Coast is New York/New Jersey, with 59% of total volume. The Hampton Roads terminals (primarily Norfolk International Terminal and Virginia International Gateway) handle 25%, with Baltimore at 9%, Philadelphia at 6% and the remainder in Boston, Wilmington (Delaware) and other smaller terminals.

SCDigest will note Baltimore for some reason has a much larger share of the trade in automobiles, coming in at no.1,handling a record 850,000 vehicles last year.

SCDigest will note a few European automakers use a terminal that is before the bridge and should be uneffected.
