Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: A Look at US Truck Freight Volumes since before the Pandemic

Truck Tonnnage still below 2019 Levels, ATA says

Sept. 8, 2023

How have US trucking volumes fared since before the pandemic?

One measure of volume is the monthly Freight Tonnage Index from the American Trucking Associations, a trade group for truckers.

The graphic below from the ATA tracks tonnage from 2019 through July of this year.

As can be seen, after a short but steep drop at the start of the pandemic in 2020, freight mostly took off, as measured by the ATA index, coming close to pre-pandemic highs in mid-2019.

But recently tonnage has been falling, and is now below the index level at the beginning 2019 - more than four years later.

Trucking is a tough business.
