An interesting recent report on the state of women in US manufactuing from the Manufacturing Alliance, a research organazaton.
That report identified a number of barriers women in the sector face, including a perception that appearance still plays a big role in how they are judged, as shown in the graphic below from the report:

As can be seen, 67% of women think this remains a big probem, versus just 37% of men.
