The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is fresh out with its annual study on what it costs a carrier to run a truck. (See Annual ATRI Study Finds Truck Operating Costs Went above Two Dollars per Mile in 2022.)
The headline news of this year’s report: The cost of operating a truck in 2022 was $2.251 per mile, surpassing two dollars per mile for the first time in the history of ATRI’s Ops Costs report.
There is a lot of interesting content in the report, but here we'll focus on the level of adoption of alternative fuel trucks by carriers, as summarized in the chart below.
The percent adoption by type of truck could be as few as one tractor, we will note.
Source: ATRI
Only 8.2% of respondents used some form of alternative fuel in at least one truck in 2022, up from 7.0% in 2021. Of all alternative fuel types, compressed natural gas (CNG) has the highest adoption rate, with 6.2% of respondents having at least one CNG-fueled truck.
