The number of US job opening has been robust since not long after the start of the pandemic in 2020, with total available positions for long stretches exceeding the number of the unemployed.
The labor shortage has also pushed white and blue collar pay way up.
But with a softening economy, that is starting to change, as shown in the graphic below, based on Labor Dept. data:

Still, the number of jobs remains historically high. February’s openings of just under 10 million were below a record 12 million reached last March but still well above 7 million openings in February 2020 ahead of the pandemic.
