Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: West Coast Ports Share Continues Down

West Coast has Lost more than 10 Percentage Points of Share Since 2017

March 30, 2023

How are West Coast ports doing in terms of share of total US container volumes?

In a couple of wordd: not good.

As seen in the chart below, all West Coast ports have seen their share slip from about 57% at the start of 2017 to just over  44% in February.

What's going on? Many factors, but fears of strikes and lockdowns - more common on the West Coast than East Coast it seems -is certainly one concern for shippers, and causes many to diversify to the East and Gulf coasts, in a trend that seems likely continue.
