May 26, 2022

According to the EPA, the transportation sector generated about 27% of US greenhouse gas emissions in 2020, the largest single source, just ahead of electricity generation at 25%.

But within transportation, how are the sources broken out?

A new report on electric trucks from the American Transportato Research Institute (ATRI) included a graphic (based on 2019 data) that answers that question, as shown below:

As can be seen, cars and light trucks together are overwhelming the top source, at 58%, well ahead of freight trucks, at 24%.

Rail generates just 2% of tranportation sector emissions.
