Earlier this week, SCDigest came across an interesting graphic on visualcapitalist.com that summarizes the carbon emissions that are generated by various modes of passenger transportation.
The data is based on the UK Government’s methodology paper for greenhouse gas reporting. The measurement is in grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents emitted per person to travel one kilometer. This includes both carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases:

Short-haul airplane transportation tops the list, at 255 grams per kilometer travelled, followed by single passenger cards at 192 grams.
It was interesting to compare the CO2 figure for electric cars, which at 53 grams is 27% of emissions from a gasoline vehicle.
We will note that in reality there are many variables here, such as actual car mileage rates and how full planes or buses are on any given trip.
