Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: A Breakdown of Costs Components for Truck Carriers

Driver Pay and Benefits by Far Highest Cost Component, but Surprising have not Really Risen as Percentage since 2015

Nov. 18, 2021

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is fresh ut with its annual study on what it costs a carrier to run a truck. The new report is based on 2020 carrier data, so it's a little dated, but as always provides an interesting snapshot.

The chart below shows the percentage breakdown across all the cost buckets:

As can be seen, driver wage and benefits together represent 44% of operating costs. What is a bit surprising is that that that percentage hasn't hardly changed since 2015, when it was at 40%. With supposedly rising driver pay, we would have thought the percentage would be growing?

Total operating cost per mile, from elswhere in the report? $1.64 in 2020, a number sure to head up in 2021 with rising diesel costs.
