What are the top ocean container carriers in the world?
To make it easy to answer that question, the maritime analysts over at Alphaliner maintain a list of the top 100 carriers, based on TEU capacity, but with other useful information as well.
Below we present the top 25 from the Alphaliner list:
Top 25 Ocean Container Carriers by TEU Capacity

Source: Alphaliner
As can be seen, Maersk Line tops the list, with capacity of more than 4 million TEU, spread across 719 ships, giving it a 17.9% share (not shown in this chart). Maersk is followed by Mediterranean Shipping Co., COSCO, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd.
What is also interesting is some of the other data, such as the percent of ships owned and on-lease, and how much capacity each carrier has on order. Number 7 carrier Evergreen Line, for example, appears to be making a move, with 40 new ships representing 37% of its current capacity on order. Conversely, Maersk's order book represents just 2% of capacity.
Number 11 Hyundai Merchant Marine has orders that will almost double its capacity.
