As SCDigest editor Dan Gilmore reported in his First Thoughts column last week, SCDigest has recently completed a major and important benchmark study on the thoughts of both shippers and 3PLs on their thinking on innovation in shipper-3PL relationships.
That column featured several charts based on the survey data, but did not include the chart below, whoch summarizes responses from 3PLs and shippers about their views on which party does what in terms of innovation.

As can be seen, about a quarter of both 3PLs and shippers say that shippers set the goals, and let 3PLs determine the best approach to reach those goals.
But the data varies a bit from there. Just 14% of 3PLs say that clients are "highly prescriptive" in terms of processes and how to achieve goals. But a much larger 41% of shippers say they are highly presctiptive with their 3PLs.
Our guess is there are just some different views of how each side defines "prescriptive."
As a result of those numbers, a much higher percent of 3PLs (63%) say this question depends on the scenario and relationship, versus 33% of shippers who view it that way.
Whether you are a shipper or a 3PL, there is some great data and insight in the formal benchmark report or the full survey response data.
