Air cargo capacity grew by a double-digit percentage levels last year, with bellyhold capacity continuing to recover and freighter space remaining above pre-Covid levels.
According the Air Cargo News magazine this week, the numbers from data provider and consultant Rotate show that in 2024 total air cargo capacity in airfreight tonne kilometer terms (ATK) was up 10% year-on-year to 442 billion ATK.
As seen in the graphic below, since 2020 most of the growth in air capacity globally has come from additions from passenger plans, while dedicated freighter capacity has been almost flat, excepting an 8% rise last year. Passenger aircraft capacity was up more, rising 13% in 2024.

The report from Rotate notes that aircraft cargo utilization was at its highest level in the past five years, meaning it was unlikely that more capacity could be squeezed out of the current global fleet.
