It’s been a long time coming, but in its quarterly earnings call last week, Tesla executives said they expect full scale production of the battery-powered Tesla Semi truck.

Supply Chain Digest Says...

One Semi came in below that 500-mile, running 384 miles on a single charge, but did go 806 miles over 24 hours.

“We’re on track to start pilot builds in the second half of next year with production starting in the first half of 2026 and ramping really throughout the year to full production,” said Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy during the earnings call.

Of course, Tesla has made and missed promised schedule dates in the past, starting from the get-go. When Musk announced plans for the truck in 2017, he promised first deliveries coming in 2019.

Well, what’s five or six years among friends. Other schedule dates were similarly missed in recent years.

However, Tesla CEO Elon Musk promises sales of the Semi will be strong.

“We have kind of ridiculous demand for the Semi,” Musk.

Then Musk got even bolder, saying that “Fundamentally, if you’ve got a Semi, the fully considered cost per mile per ton of transport is better than a diesel truck. Any company that doesn’t adopt an electric Semi will lose. It’s not a subjective thing.”

Relative to PepsiCo, an active tester of the Tesla Semi, Moravy said on the call that its drivers do not want to drive any other truck once they have driven a Semi, according to Transport Topics magazine on-line.

Previously, Tesla has promised a 500-mile range for Semi. However, in September 2023, the Semis participated in the North American Council for Freight Efficiency’s Run on Less-Electric Depot program.

There, one Semi came in below that 500-mile, running 384 miles on a single charge, but did go 806 miles over 24 hours.

Tesla, the world’s most valuable company by market cap previously said production capacity of the Semi in its Reno, NV factory would be 50,000 tractors annually.
