The list is calculated by Transport Topics and consulting firm SJ Consulting Group and is based on 2022 revenue for freight movement and goods handling across all geographies and all modes of transportation, including truck, rail, ocean, air and parcel, as well as non-asset based third-party logistics providers.
Revenues are taken from company financial filings and estimated as needed by SJ Consulting
In previous years, for reasons not clear, Amazon has not been eligible for the list – and now in its first year debuts in the top spot, with net logistics revenue of $117.3 billionlast year, bumping out last year’s number 1 UPS, which dropped to second place with about $100 in sales.
Amazon generates logistics revenue primarily from a couple of 3PL services. The first is Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) which handles fulfillment (pick, pack and ship) for its Marketplace customers.
Then there is Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF), which offers similar order fulfillment services for sales channels independent of Amazon. For example, Amazon and ecommerce platform Shopify recently announced a deal where Shopify’s web store customers can offer their end customers Amazon fulfillment services.
Keep in mind this revenue is only counted for Amazon’s third-party services. It does not include fulfillment and shipping costs for the millions of items Amazon stocks and resells on its own
After Amazon and UPS, the rest of the top 10 is shown in the graphic below:
