For some time,
there has been a significant gap between contract and so-called spot market rates for US truckload freight carriage.
As can be seen in the graphic below from last week's State of Logistics Report 2021 from CSCMP, for a long while (continuing in years before those shown in the graphic), spot rates were well below contract costs.
Then for the second half of the odd freight year of 2020, the picture flipped, with the spot market well above contact rates.

Now, the spot and contract markets are on par, for now at least - but for shippers unfortunately at elevated levels for either spot or contract arrangements.
