Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: Using RFID and Blockchain to Track Serialized Items from Manufacturer to Retailer

First Item Tracked all the Way to Store in Proof of Concept is Michael Kors Parka

Oct. 22,  2020

In late summer, the RFID Lab at Auburn University released a report on a proof of concent test of using blockchain technology and RFID to track the movement of serialized products down to the item level from manufacturer to retail store.

The purpose of the pilot was simply to demonstrate such information could be successully shared across supply chain partners, not at this stage to estimate value or anything else beyond basic feasibility.

Major participants in the pilot included Nike, Macy's, Kohl's, Hermankay and PVH.

The first item to be fully tracked was a Michael Kors parka shipped from Hermankay to a Macy's DC and then to a Macy's store, as shown in the graphic below:

Will blockchain and RFID soon lead us to whole new levels of supply chain visiblity? That's the promise.

The full report is available at the RFID Lab web site.
