Two weeks ago,a outfit called Reveal - The Center for Investigative Reportng published
a report alleging high levels of serious injuries among Amazon fulfillment center workers.
The report from what appears to be a left-leaning organization said that amazon had 7.7 serious injuries per 100 workers at its fulfillment centers Amazon in 2019.
TThat rate, if accurate, would be nearly double the most recent industry average, according to Reveal, as shown in the graphic from Reveal below:
The investigation also found that Amazon's injury rates have steadily increased each year since 2016, based on internal safety reports and weekly injury numbers from 150 Amazon fulfillment centers that were obtained by Reveal.
The internal reports also showed that injury rates were higher at Amazon facilities that are heavily automated. Why? Perhaps because workers at more robotic fulfillment centers were expected to pick up and scan roughly 400 items an hour, compared with the standard rate of 100 items per hour at other facilities. That could be leading to injuries related to fatigue, the report suggests.
Reveal also alleges that Amazon may also be underreporting warehouse worker injuries.
Amazon said in a statement that it "strongly refutes the claims" that it misled the public on its workplace injury rates. The company disputed Reveal's characterization of " serious injuries," which under OSHA reporting can include almost anything, Amazon said.
