Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: Barriers to Electric Truck Adoption

Despite High Interest, Electric Trucks not Really Ready for Major Deployments, UPS Study Says

Oct. 31, 2018

There is a lot of interest in use of electric trucks for shorter haul, multi-stop delivery routes - and maybe some day beyond, when battery and charging infrastucture improves.

A new research report from UPS finds the top expected benefit from a move to electriv vehicles is actually related to sustainability and reduced CO2 emissions, ahead of reduced operating costs.

The key question: what are the important barriers to electric truck adoption?

The survey ask carrier and private fleet managers that question. Below you will find the survey results, in which respondents from large companies were asked to select top barriers they perceive to electrification:

As can be seen, "Initial purchase price prohibitiveā€¯ (55%) topped the barrier list, followed by "Inadequate charging infrastructure at our facilities" (44%), then "Inadequate product availability"
(35%). In essence, the top barriers were focused on the relatively new nature of the
electrification market for commercial vehicles.

"The market evolution for comparable, available and cost-competitive vehicle and infrastructure
technologies is not yet at a point where most large organizations can overcome those barriers at
scale," UPS notes, adding that "These barriers were reflected in many phone interviews with fleet managers."
