Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: In Honor of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week

Infographic has Data on Trucking Jobs - and It Isn't Good

Sept. 13, 2017

Did you know it was National Truck Driver Appreciation Week?

The event was developed a while back by the American Trucking Associations, and well supported by a related organization called Trucking Moves America Forward, which has many programs to improve the image of trucking in the US.

“This week was created to commemorate and support the industry professionals who work daily to deliver America’s goods,” said Chris Spear, ATA CEO.

We thought ATA would have created an infographic on the importance of truck drivers for the nation's economy to go along with the week, but we can't fine one.

But we did find the graphic below on some of the demographics relative to truck driving, from Shaye Anderson at Trucks.com, to which we added the fact that there are 3.5 million US workers making a living driving trucks today. That's a huge number.

But as the graphic shows, we don't have enough of them, and that is going to get much worse soon - unless autonomous trucks somehow come to the rescue in a few years

In support of this effort, Trucking Moves America Forward is partnering with state trucking associations to run billboard advertisements along key highways to thank truck drivers for their service to the industry - take a look for one in your state.

That is just one of a number of PR efforts taking place this week between the ATA and Trucking Moves America Forward.

Truck driving is a tough job and is central to our economy and lifestyles. SCDigest does truly appreciate the 3.5 million drivers.
