The news around strategies, pilots and programs relative to multi-channel delivery and fulfillment is coming so fast it is hard to keep up with it.
We have reported on many of them over the past couple of years, from Macy's plan to use about 200 of its retail stores as e-fulfillment centers to the recent flurry of news about every one from Amazon to the USPS and several more doing various tests on same day delivery services.
This has been one bit of logistics news the mainstream and business press has really picked up on, with stories in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Forbes and many more.
SCDigest thought it would be good to take a step back and try to summarize some of the news and announcements that have come out in the past year or so. You will find that summary in table format below.
Of course, relative to the first category in the list, shipping costs, every e-merchant has some policy, and many of those change for promotional reasons throughout the year. We simply selected a few interesting or prominent ones to highlight, but will note that in general, the trend is clearly toward free shipping.
All this investment and service enhancement even as most e-commerce programs in retail struggle to get into the black, with many reported to be losing money even as sales volumes soar.
We hope you enjoy this summary below:
