That’s the ceiling for the cost of products on a new on-line site Amazon launched this week called Amazon Haul. The site an actual maximum price of $20, but expects most sales will come in at the lower price points. What’s going on? The strategy is aimed primarily at consumers who shop at discount retailers such as fast-growing Chinese ecommerce players Temu and Shein. The Amazon Haul name is a play on social media "hauls," where people show off their purchases. “Amazon Haul is a response to both the rise of low-price Chinese marketplaces and the fact that consumers are increasingly seeking value for money as they try to make their budgets stretch further," said Neil Saunders, managing director of market research firm GlobalData. |

That’s how many people were on a waiting list to get a spot for Waymo’s self-driving robotaxi service in Los Angeles. But there is no waiting list now, as Waymo, a unit of Google parent the Alphabet company, this week opened the door to all potential passengers. Anyone with the Waymo One smartphone app will now be able to request a ride around an 80-square-mile territory of LA. That as Waymo has also been building out its robotaxi program in Phoenix. Waymo says it now transports more than 150,000 weekly trips in its robotaxis before LA was fully turned on, in what could be another milestone in the evolution of self-driving car technology since the company began as a secret project at Google 15 years earlier. |

That’s about the size of the US grocery market, according to figures compiled by Coresight Research. Why is that in the news this week? Because of news that Amazon is once again changing its strategy to succeed in gaining share in this huge market dominated by brick and mortar retailers such as Walmart, Kroger and Safeway. The Wall Street Journal reported that “Amazon’s new designs aim to pull together various fulfillment networks for its Whole Foods Market premium grocery business and its mass-market Amazon Fresh stores into a common delivery platform, giving the grocery businesses greater scale with online customers. Amazons goal is to create one-stop shopping for products ranging from organic produce to Tide detergent and Cheez-It crackers and eliminate the need for shoppers to visit multiple stores. Amazon said it has started to fulfill delivery orders for Whole Foods products and popular household goods out of 26 of its Amazon Fresh fulfillment centers, with plans to add more soon. The company has also started delivering groceries from a same-day fulfillment site in Phoenix. |
