Supply Chain Digest Gearing Up for ProMat 2015 Coverage Next Week

Finding Interesting New Solutions More Difficult than Readers Might Think, SCDigest Editor Dan Gilmore Says

SCDigest Editorial Staff

Next week will see the start of MHI's ProMat 2015 trade show, held as usual every other year at Chicago's mammoth McCormick Place convention center, and SCDigest will be there in full force, again with daily recaps of the action.

The event begins Monday, March 23 and continues through Thursday March 26, and once again the Automate robotics show will be held in conjunction with ProMat, with ProMat registrants provided complimentary access to that show as well.

ProMat is the main MHI event, held every other year (in the odd number years) in Chicago, where some 30,000 attendees will likely participate. For years ProMat toggled with the much smaller North American Materials Handling show in Cleveland on the even numbered years, until that show was replaced by a new MODEX event in Atlanta starting in 2012 and continuing in 2014.

SCDigest editor Dan Gilmore, Materials Handling editor Cliff Holste, and Jim Stephens, an anchor on our Supply Chain Television Channel, will all be at the show.

As usual, the team will record recaps of key themes and interesting new solutions at the show to be broadcast the following morning. This year, there will be recaps on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings covering the action on days 1 and 2.

Though MHI has tried with some success to broaden both ProMat and MODEX into general supply chain events, materials handling equipment and systems will certainly be center stage. It is very expensive for vendors to construct large booths with working systems, and many only do so in a big way every other year at ProMat.

That said, virtually every provider of Warehouse Management System (WMS) software solutions, as well as a variety of other software vendors, will also have booths at the show.

"It is harder for us to find interesting new solutions to report on each year than readers might realize," says SCDigest editor Dan Gilmore. "First, a lot of times vendors aren't really featuring much that's new. Second, a lot of them frankly aren't very good at communicating in the signage and displays what they are featuring what is new and sometimes even what they do."

Holste says that among other interests he will be looking closely at "piece picking" systems and technologies this year, given their potential role in efulfillment operations.

"There are actually quite a few different types of piece picking systems out there," Holste says. He added that automated case picking systems are also growing, and will be another focus area.

Gilmore said he enjoys finding completely unexpected solutions, such one vendor at the last ProMat show in 2013 that had a unique system for keeping birds away from distribution centers, to another that offered blimp delivery of hard to transport item to remote locations.

"These are the sort of "hidden jewels" that are fun to communicate about back to our audience," Gilmore said.
