Author Steve Viscelli of the University of Pennsylvania spent six months as a over-the-road truck driver as part of his research for his new book, titled The Big Rig: Trucking and the Decline of the American Dream, which chroncles the very tough life of most US drivers.

It should be no surprise that the US has a  truck driver shortage, Viscelli says - it's a lousy job. And the promise of owning your own business as a contract driver is largely a fraud, Viscelli says.
