The News: Supply Chain software vendor RedPrairie has announced new support for RFID in its Yard Management System (YMS) solution.
Why It's Worth Noting: Use of RFID with YMS presents a clear and increasingly popular opportunity to use the technology in distribution related processes. To date, many companies have used RFID tags for basic trailer check in/check out of the yard, but we expect to see strong adoption over time of more comprehensive deployments, such as is available now from RedPrairie, in using RFID for overall yard visibility and management of trailers.
The News: RedPrairie says it has added comprehensive RFID support to its Yard Management System (YMS), a module of its Warehouse Management System (WMS).
In addition to basic support for tracking trailers arriving at or leaving the yard, the capabilities allow companies to
use fixed zone or mobile RFID readers to locate trailers within the yard, confirm trailer movements, and conduct yard audits. The solution incorporates Event Management capabilities to alert managers and initiate resolution to exceptions uncovered by the RFID reads - for example, that inventory needed for an order has arrived in the yard.
“The ability of RFID technology to read all of the tags in a given area makes finding trailers and verifying movements a natural by-product of proximity to fixed or mobile readers. This makes yard management more accurate and efficient,” says Tom Kozenski, RedPrairie vice president product strategy.
