How many types or styles of order management exist in your operations?
That is a very important question, because it naturally drives the types of capabilities needed in order management system technology.
Gartner analyst Jeff Woods recently published a research note in which he identified eight different style of order processing. We summarized that note in one of the articles in our new SCDigest Letter, focused this time on Distributed Order Management (DOM) technology. To download an e-version of the full 16-page Letter, go here: SCDigest Letter on Distributed Order Management 2011. We also as usual have a full resources page associated with the Letter, where in addition to the Letter you will find white papers, videos, featured articlae and other resources related to DOM technology: Distributed Order Management Resources Page.
As part of our summary of the Gartner article, we re-created a graphic that summares the eight style of OMS identified by Woods and shown below.

As we noted in the Letter, we might have added a ninth style specifically focused on e-commerce processes, but regardlless Woods has done some nice work here.
With mergers and acquisition, multi-channe; commerce and more, it is not uncommon for a single company to have quite a number of different order management styles in their enterprises - the real question is if they know it.
