Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: When it Comes to eCommerce, There is Amazon and a Bunch of Number 2's

Amazon has Nearly Eight Times the Share of Second Place Walmart

Aug. 13,  2020

We all know Amazon dominates US ecommerce, but how much so the Wall Street Journal recently brought into sharp relief in the graphic below, which plots the US ecommerce market shares of top contenders.

Amazon's share of the US on-line retail market actually fell early in Q2 as it battled some fulfillment delays and for a period limited what products it would ship, but is now on the rise again, currently at just under 40% of the ecommerce market, dominating number 2 Walmart, which has about a 5% share.

After Walmart at number 2 comes Target, Instacart, Best Buy, and eBay, tightly grouped with 2-4% shares.

SCDigest will note some such analyses include all of Amazon's revenues in its ecommerce numbers, such as its AWS web services unit, which exaggerates its share. Not clear if that was done here or not.
