Supply Chain Graphic of the Week - RFID and the Internet of Things

Classifying Objects and Managing Hierarchies is Tricky, It Turns Out

How far away are we from an "Internet of Things?"

Hard to say, but recent work by the Coordination and Support for Action for Global RFID-Related Activities and Standardization (CASAGRAS) organization is helping move the ball down the field. As SCDigest reported this week, this group, funded by the European Union, recently issued a report on the " Internet of Things" topic that is its charter. That report, among many interesting observations, said the concept needs to be broadened beyond the RFID foundation that was its initial charter. (See RFID News: The “Internet of Things” Needs to be about more than RFID, European Research Group Says.)

We found this graphic especially interesting. When thinking about connecting "things" to the Internet, there are both different attributes of those objects, and in many cases a hierarchy (a desk within a building, as a simple two-level example).

Industry sectors not listed in the chart had modest changes in DIO, in the range of +/- 2%.
