National Association of Manufacturers Study Says Output Would Take a Big Hit

It's good to think Green, but there is often also a real cost that must be balanced.

That's the pont of recent research by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) regarding the likely impact of proposed climate change legislation, America's Climate Security Act of 2007 (S. 2191), authored by U.S. Senators Joseph Lieberman and John Warner. The U.S. Senate is expected to debate the legislation in June 2008.

As the chart below shows, NAM says, if passed as proposed, the law would significantly reduce US manufacturing output.

The "Low" and "High" costs are meant to represent the range of possible outcomes from the legislation. While obviously NAM represents a certain set of interests, it's important to look at Green issues and decisions from a true 360-degree perspective.

We will be reviewing the full NAM report on this topic in more detail next week in SCDigest On-Target.
