This week, SCDigest editor Dan Gilmore gave a presentation on Automated Case Picking (ACP) at the Warehouse Education and Research Council (WERC) 2010 meeting in Anaheim, CA to a packed crowd, which demonstrated the level of intereest in ACP technologies.
The good news: today, there are a wide variety of ACP solutions available to meet specific operational requirements.
The challenging news: what is right for each company depends on many factors.
The graphic below was part of Gilmore's presentation at WERC, and highlights the primary considerations companies must manage when evaluating the potential for ACP solutions and different approaches to automate the case picking process.

Some considerations, such as SKU profiles and Order Profiles, are common decision drivers of any distribution center automation technologies, but may have different impacts specific to ACP.
Others, such as Cycle Time Requirements and Facility Constraints, may have a more direct impact specific to ACP adoption that will lead to some ACP approaches to be viable for a given facility and others to not make the cut for evaluation.
