Dr. John Langley, one of the supply chain industry's most well-known academics, announced today that he is leaving Georgia Tech for a new post at Penn State University, likely catching many supply chain practitioners and academics a bit by surprise.

Langley had been at Georgia Tech for nine years, since he made the move to Atlanta from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he continues to reside.

At Georgia Tech, Dr. Langley ran the university's Supply Chain Executive Forum among many other duties, and is well known for his work leading the Annual Third Party Logistics Study with Capgemini Consulting, presented each year at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals' annual conference. He currently serves on the board of directors of Averitt Express, Inc., Forward Air Corporation, and UTi Worldwide, Inc., and is one of the industry's most active speakers.

The move to Penn State is a bit like going home for Dr. Langley, as he received his B.S., M.B.A., and Ph.D. degrees at Penn State University before joining the University of Tennessee faculty in 1973. He is a past president of the Council of Logistics Management (now CSCMP), and in 1993 was a recipient of the organization's Distinguished Service Award, which many consider the supply chain profession's highest honor.

Dr. Langley told SCDigest that his official start date at Penn State is January 1, 2011, but that he is soon to be involved in programs and events at his new academic home.

"Overall, this change of universities is a very significant one for me, as I will be involved in the academic, as well as the executive education and corporate sponsor elements of the Penn State Supply Chain programs," Dr. Langley said in an email statement to his friends and colleagues. "Although my 9+ years at Georgia Tech were very meaningful to me, the offer to return to a leading business-school environment is an opportunity that fits well with my career objectives."

In terms of interests in addition to supply chain management, Dr. Langley will continue being an owner of the Knoxville Ice Bears, a three-time championship professional hockey team in the Southern Professional Hockey League.
