Among the several new pieces of research that are released each year at the CSCMP annual conference is the Annual Trends and Issues in Logistics and Transportation study, delivered for the 25th time in Orlando a few weeks ago.

As usual the research effort - based on survey data from several hundred supply chain professionals - was led by Dr. Karl Manrodt of Georgia College and Dr. Mary Holcomb of the University of Tennessees, assisted this year by Tommy Barnes of technology firm project44.

There is a lot of data in the research, but one thing that caught SCDigest's eye were the results relative to what type of transportation management system (TMS) companies are using.

As seen in the chart below, the top category was so-called "best of breed" TMS solutions, at 25% of survey respondents, folowed closely behind by TMS from the company's ERP provider, at 22.2%.

Manual methods came in 3rd place, at 14% of respondents. 8.3% of shippers use the TMS from one of their 3PLs, the same percentage using Cloud TMS, home grown TMS, and legacy TMS systems.

This data would be even more interesting if it were reported by company size. Also, SCDigest is highly confident the percentage of Cloud deployments will rise rapidly in the next few years, and is in fact much higher than 8.3% for new TMS deployments right now, perhaps approach the 50% range.
