Supply Chain News Makers Video Series:

Author Jeffrey Rothfeder on Why Chinese US Factories are Struggling

Feb. 1, 2016

Investment in US factories by Chinese companies - both existing plants and greenfield projects - is on the rise, with big recent news that Chinese appliance company Haier is acquiring GE Appliance for $5.4 billion.

But many of these Chinese US factories are struggling, says well-known writer and editor Jeffrey Rothfeder, author of the popular business book "Driving Honda" in 2014.

There is a clear culture clash between Chinese managers and US workers, Rothfeder says, and it will be tough for the Chinese to change their ways. Chinese US plants are seeing high turnover rates, and workers at one Chinese owned metals plant quickly organized recently even in generally anti-union Alabama due to lousy pay and poor working conditions.

Rothfeder discusses all this and more in this video interview with SCDigest editor Dan Gilmore.
