Giant HP further jumped on the green supply
chain bandwagon last week, announcing a
goal to reduce its energy use by 20 percent
by 2010.
The new global goal is based off HP’s
2005 energy use levels, and involves designing
more energy-efficient products and institute
energy-efficient operating practices in
its facilities worldwide as it revamps its
supply chain to be more energy-efficient.
HP has been active on the environmental
track for some time, winning kudos from
Greenpeace and designing more environmentally-friendly
products than many in the industry. For
example, the company was among the first
PC makers to meet the new Environmental
Protection Agency’s EnergyStar 4.0
requirements for power supplies, which HP
claims are 33 percent more efficient than
their predecessors.
HP is also committing to an expanded use
of renewable energy sources to power its
operations.
The company also announced it has worked
with more than 600 suppliers in its social
and environmental responsibility program
since 2003, and has supplier training programs
in Eastern Europe and China. |
